WHAT TO DO FOR THE COMMON COLD

You can get the "commom cold" more than 6 times a year.  The reason for this is that the cold symptoms can be caused by greater than 72 different viruses.  You can develope immunity from one virus and then catch a different virus that causes the same or similar symptoms.  Cold symptoms include runny nose, post nasal drainage, sneezing, cough, chest congestion. A cold is not treated with antibiotics because antibiotics don't kill viruses. Antibiotics only kill bacteria which is different from viruses. Here are some ideas on how to best treat the commom cold:
Vitamin C 500 mg per day for children and 2000 mg a day for adults helps boost the immune system to better fight the cold virus.
Zinc lozenges or nasal spray help to keep the virus from sticking to the mucus membranes.
For symptoms of nasal congestion, a decongestant might help.
A mucolytic, like guafenisin, which is the ingredient in Mucinex helps to thin secretions.
